I wanted to create the world’s best Flax seed oils from New Zealand grown organic flax seeds.
At my organic farm in Geraldine, I set to work and soon the whole family joined in. In the winter of 1991 I created my first bottle of flax seed oil which I sold to friends and soon after Waihi Bush Organic Farm was born.
I went on to create a fun and supportive company where everyone is encouraged to be themselves and develop their skills. Ensuring that we all look after our environment through reducing food miles, reusing energy and recycling.
Waihi Bush was originally settled by my family in the 1870's when the Woodbury area was a significant source of native timber.
Fortunately, 15 ha of virgin native bush were retained on the property and this is now the only remaining example left on the Canterbury Plains. It includes many magnificent totara, matai and kahika tea over 1000 years old, several over 8 metres in girth.
I started pressing flax seed oil at Waihi Bush Organic Farm in 1993, using a tiny press that made about 30 litres a day, with imported technology to protect the delicate oil from damage during manufacture.
By 2002 the 100-year-old stable building on the farm, which housed the operation was bulging at the seams. The whole operation was moved into larger premises in Kennedy Street, Geraldine and the company name was changed to
Functional Whole Foods New Zealand Ltd.
At Functional Whole Foods the business grew to incorporate more seed oils. I brought together the raw natural ingredients of each seed oil to create unique blends to add to our range, to combine all of the health benefits, reflecting what is happening to your health as you grow and change.
Utilising the by-product of Flax Seed Oil which is a fibre, and other seed oil fibres I have developed a range of smoothie mixes that include superfoods, which enrich people's diets and are so easy to use.
